Is Rainbow Six Siege cross platform?
With many multiplayer game developers finally announcing cross-play between all current and next-generation consoles, it’s inevitable that fans of the hit strategy first-person shooter Rainbow Six Siege will wonder the same. Currently, the game is one of the last to not adopt this for play between PS4, Xbox One, and PC players — but will players see a change to this on next-generation consoles?
The short answer: yes, but in a limited manner. In March 2020, the developer confirmed that those on PS5 will be able to access matchmaking with PS4 players, and the same will be possible for those wanting to play between Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One consoles. However, this functionality only expands to the particular family of consoles; thus, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC players will continue not seeing one another in matchmaking lobbies.
As more games are branching out to allow full cross-play availability, there is still hope for this to eventually change inside the title. Game director Leroy Athanassof told Window Central that it’s a conversation that has to be had between Xbox and PlayStation, but he believes that “it’s just a matter of time before it happens.”
Although the game will not have official next-generation iterations, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S users will have access to the title via backward compatibility when each console releases. Ubisoft has expressed interest in providing visual and gameplay improvements on next-gen, but the company has not given any further details on the matter so far.
